The Avignon Bridge (Saint Bénezet), Avignon
The Saint Bénezet bridge, also known as the ‘Pont d’Avignon’, has been a major witness to the history of Avignon and is known throughout the world thanks to the famous song, “Sur le Pont d'Avignon''. The bridge was built in the 12th century but was washed away several times by the flooding of the Rhône, and in the 17th century it was finally abandoned. However, it remains a classified World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
